Archivists and records managers face a communications environment today that is far different from previous generations. Social media, YouTube, mobile phones, blogs, podcasts, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, TV, radio. . . . In every minute of every day, Internet users watch 6.9 million videos, Instagram users like more than 2.4 million posts, and Americans use 18 million megabytes of wireless data. The sheer amount of communication is overwhelming. 
Where do we fit in? How can these channels be used to advocate for our profession and our scholarship? Do we have a role to play in combatting false information and the distortion of the historical record, particularly on the Internet? 
This limited-enrollment, full-day workshop during ARCHIVES*RECORDS 2018 is tailored to archivists and record managers with a goal of instilling in participants the confidence to be better communicators. Workshop leader Jason Steinhauer, who is well-grounded in the unique elements of the archival profession, provides attendees with tips and tools to bolster public outreach; stimulate public interest in archives, history, and the humanities; and implement strategies to reach STEM-driven media and audiences by applying the principles of the emerging field of history communication to your own work.
The workshop will include four sessions:
  • Session 1: Experimenting with communicating historical and archival content in new forms.
  • Session 2: Today’s communications environment and the implications for professionals and organizations.
  • Session 3: Specific media formats, such as podcasting, blogging, and social media, and techniques for being effective in each.
  • Session 4: Role-playing scenarios that practice communicating with various audiences.
The workshop will conclude with action steps for each participant.

The registration fee for the workshop to be covered by SAA. Selected participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodations.
