After brief section business meetings, two panelists from the public and private sectors - and from inside and outside the profession - will focus on what we as a profession can do to be more transparent in "behind-the-scenes" activities we do on a regular basis, particularly in regards to appraisal and retention-scheduling decision making activities.
Nate Jones is Director of the Freedom of Information Act Project for the National Security Archive in Washington, D.C. Lauren Gaines is the manager, corporate archivist, and historian for Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 financial services organization located in the Midwest. Jones and Gaines will discuss records openness and how appraisal/retention scheduling decisions of archivists and records managers can affect larger public interest transparency efforts. Jones will also touch upon the backlog of records at the National Records Centers not formally accessioned to NARA yet.
